The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment has approved the merger of TSB and Irish Life & Permanent on competition grounds. Ms Harney said yesterday that she did not consider the acquisition of TSB Bank by Irish Life & Permanent to be notifiable under Ireland's Merger Acts.

As the merger is largely confined to the Republic, it will not require approval from the European Commission.
