Thank God you remembered! Half an hour before your dinner guests arrive, you realised the four bottles of 1978 PulignyMontrachet were unchilled. Serving up tepid such a gorgeous Burgundy white would have made you the laughing stock of the set - you cleverly put them in the freezer for a few minutes.
But that was an hour and a half ago. You've been too busy with the aperitifs and the prawn-based amuse-bouches to think of the wine. The freezer has meanwhile done its job; all the wine is frozen into a rock-hard block, and two of the bottles have cracked. The only other wine you have is two bottles of Blue Nun and Black Tower, vintage unknown. All the off-licences are closed - it is Good Friday.
If only you had read today's Gizmo column earlier. Then you could have averted the disaster by procuring a Vin Chilla wine cooler. Instead of using a freezer, you simply fill the Vin Chilla with ice and water, and plug it in. Five or 10 minutes later - the machine has a timer - your bottle is perfectly chilled. It can chill 12 bottles an hour. And when red wines are below room temperature, you can use warm water in the Vin Chilla to bring them up.
The Vin Chilla, around £70 (#89), is available from all Molloy's off-licences and other off-licences.
