Are you a stay-at-home spouse with a relatively rich partner? Feeling unloved and unwanted by the Minister for Finance? Want to get revenge for the "individualisation" of the standard rate tax band?

Forget about whining letters to The Irish Times, steer clear of the stream-of-consciousness phone calls to Marian Finucane - now you can "de-individualise" some of the drudgery of your daily toil, with the new robot hoover.

Made by Dyson, the snappily-named DC06 requires you only to push the "on" button. Its 50 sensory devices constantly feed data into its electronic brain, and while you concentrate on your core business of nurturing the next generation, it whirrs around the room.

The more it vacuums, the more it builds up a profile of the rooms in your home. Its artificial intelligence prevents the machine from falling down stairs, and it will pause if a child or an animal gets too close. It will also hoover delicately around a mug or a pair of spectacles left on the floor.

The DC06, around £2,500 (€3,175), will be available some time next year.
