A FLEDGLING Belfast telecoms startup has been acquired by Xilinx, the semi-conductor manufacturer which has headquarters in San Jose, Dublin and Singapore.

No financial details of the deal surrounding the acquisition of Omiino have been disclosed.

The Northern Ireland company was established in 2007 by a team of telecommunication and semiconductor engineers who had worked for a range of companies including Nortel, Flextronics Amphion Semiconductor.

In the last two years Omiino has developed a portfolio of innovative technology solutions which are currently used by telecoms suppliers and telecoms equipment manufacturers.

The company, based in North Belfast, employs 16 people including its co-founders, Gary Hamilton, its chief executive officer, Mark Carson and Andrew Brown.

Mr Hamilton has described the acquisition by Xilinx as “great news”

“We have worked very hard to develop this exciting technology and then bring it to market. It is good news for Xilinx because they will now be able to use that technology across whole families of products.”

Omiino’s founders initially funded the business through a combination of their own money, private investors and bank funding.

One of its primary first backers was Crescent Capital, a Belfast based venture capital firm which invested £750,000.

It also raised a further £1.5 million through a seed funding round in 2008.
