A Galway-based medical device developer, Crospon, has won a European award for its surgical imaging technology.
The company scooped the 2012 European Enabling Technology Award for Surgical Imaging Technology for its EndoFlip imaging system.
The device is designed to be minimally invasive and to be used for monitoring, diagnosis, and therapy in the gastroenterology area.
It measures the inner dimensions and functions of critical sphincters and valves in the human body, a process that had to be managed indirectly prior to the EndoFlip system’s development, and allows for a quick and low-cost way to detect gastroesophageal reflux disease.
“It is a 10-minute procedure and allows for more accurate data compared to traditional manometry,” said Darshana De, senior research analyst at awards sponsor Frost Sullivan.
Crospon chief executive John O’Dea said the firm was building on the technology and moving into other therapeutic focused areas such as smart dilation catheters with integrated imaging for oesophageal disorders.
The imaging technology from Crospan is also being showcased at a European scientific event in Paris this week.
