Taking the wind out of windbags' sails

One of the more tedious aspects of companies' annual meetings is the ritual of electing and reelecting directors.

Invariably, one time-serving non-executive director pipes up "Mr Chairman, it gives me great pleasure blah blah to propose" followed by another time-server with his "Mr Chairman, it gives me great pleasure to second the nomination blah blah."

Company law, of course, requires this time-wasting rigmarole to be endured by shareholders who bother to turn up for the meeting. But Current Account was delighted to see Kerry's company secretary Brian Durran find a way around this nonsense and speed up this process.

No rocket science solution - all the a.g.m. All the meeting has to do is agree to have directors being elected or re-elected to be proposed en bloc and hey presto, the elections are done in one fell swoop. Other plc company secretaries please note.

Of course, if every plc did this, it would mean that the verbose windbags who propose and second nominations would lose their 10 seconds of fame. But that's a small price to pay!
