US multinational Stratus Computers which employs 350 people at a plant in Dublin generated sales of $190 million (£137 million) for the fourth-quarter ended December 31st last. The figures represent an 8 per cent increase on the same period in 1996. Sales for the full year were up 13 per cent, to $688 million, compared to 1996.
The company does not give an individual breakdown for its Irish operation which is based in Blanchardstown and is the headquarters for its world wide manufacturing.
Stratus - which located in Ireland in 1989 - is ranked as one of the top ten Irish-based computer exporters. It manufactures computers for "critical applications" where customers need around-the-clock service. Its clients include some of the world's leading airlines, credit card companies, including American Express, cellular phone operations and even the FBI.
In a statement, Mr Eoin O'Driscoll, managing director, Stratus Computer Ireland and vice president worldwide manufacturing, said 1997 had been a very good year in both of the group's major industry markets. Telecommunications revenue grew 30 per cent and revenue from financial services grew 20 per cent.
