THE snail is mightier than the protester. Or so it might seem from reports on a hold-up to a £100 million road building scheme in Newbury in England. Having appeared to have overcome the protests of the green lobby the road-builders' plans are now threatened by reports that the "Desmoulin's Whorl Snail" is resident on a reserve through which the bypass would run. one of Europe's rarest, it is on the Government's list of protected species. The only question now is whether the snails will throw themselves on the ground in front of the oncoming bulldozers.
