STOCKS on Wall Street ended marginally higher today after coming under pressure for most of the session from end of the quarter profit taking.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones average of 30 industrial stocks rose 7.22 points to close at 5,643.86.
The blue chip index rose more than 23 points early in the day, retreated at mid morning to spend the afternoon slightly lower, but rallied gently into the close.
Computer issues, which had gained a lot lately, were among the most vulnerable to nervous profit taking. Bit losers on the Big Board included IBM, Compaq, Hewlett Packard and Digital Equipment.
Bank stocks rose as interest rates were pushed lower by rising bond prices.
The NYSE's composite index was unchanged at 348.77.
At the American Stock Exchange, the market value index fell 1.58 to 567.77.
