A new Superquinn outlet planned for a site on the North Road, in Finglas, Dublin, will involve a £10 million investment by the company and replace the original supermarket established in the area 33 years ago.
Senator Feargal Quinn, managing director, said yesterday that the company was moving from its original shop premises on McKee Avenue because of restricted car parking. It will move to a site currently occupied by Molloy & Sherry Transport. "The shop needs to re-locate to provide modern facilities and to meet customer demand for easier access and safe and convenient car parking," he said. The company plans to develop the existing McKee Avenue premises, including space occupied by the former Casino Cinema since 1970, and a 60-space car park, as retail units "which will considerably enhance and enliven the street", Senator Quinn said.
He said the move reflected changing trends with families doing their weekly food shopping by car and his new outlets had to have 300 car spaces. "We are trying to move from the existing shop in Naas in a similar way," he said.
He added that the purpose-built new supermarket would be completed within two years in an area where new housing projects were planned Superquinn is also planning a second outlet in Bray, at Ballywaltrin. A new store is also planned for Dundalk, which is due to open in November, and for Waterford. The company has 11 outlets in Dublin along with its premises in Bray, Naas, Kilkenny, Carlow and Clonmel.
