The Financial Engineering Network (FEN) has developed a disability cover insurance product called Pathway Protector targeted at professionals and high earners. It provides an income after four weeks and is payable to individuals up to the ages of 50, 55, 60 or 65 with a fully tax-deductible premium. It can also include specified illness income-benefit which is paid tax-free alongside the taxable disability cover benefit should the policyholder suffer from one of the illnesses specified in the policy. The maximum amount of disability coverage per year is £150,000.
This type of cover is traditionally very expensive and FEN's new product is no exception. For example, FEN claims it can offer disability cover of £97,500 per annum to a male solicitor who is age 38 next birthday with a salary of £130,000. This is approximately 75 per cent of his income. FEN says the additional critical illness cover may bridge the remaining 25 per cent income gap. The total cost for the package is £347.23 per month gross and £201.19 per month after tax relief.
