SALES of Murphy's stout in Britain increased by 10 per cent over the past year, according to brewers Whitbread, responsible for brewing and marketing the drink in Britain.
The share of the British stout market held by Murphy's is estimated to have increased from 11 per cent to 13.3 per cent during the two years to the end of February. Trade estimates indicate that the increasing competition from Murphy's and Beamish has reduced Guinness's market share to 79 per cent. Murphy's continued growth contributed to improved 1995-96 financial results at Whitbread. Profits before non operating items and tax increased 11 per cent to £283 million in the 53 weeks to March 2nd on turnover also up 11 per cent at £2.75 billion. Total dividend payments rise 8.2 per cent.
