A regulator to oversee the setting of airport charges could be in place before the end of the year.
The Minister for Public Enterprise, Ms O'Rourke, said yesterday she hopes to bring a proposal to Cabinet this month to appoint a regulator for the State-owned airports.
Aer Rianta has recommended the establishment of a regulatory regime to set and adjust landing charges. Speaking at the introduction of the third phase of Aer Rianta's heritage programme, Ms O'Rourke said the appointment of a regulator was something she was happy to recommend to the Cabinet.
"As the Minister I am tired of being beset by those who want to raise or lower airport charges. "No matter what the Government does it is an impossible task when they are also in the position of being a shareholder."
The appointment of a regulator will require legislation but the Minister is optimistic that such a role can be established before the end of the year.
"We will have to await legislation but a regulator could be appointed on an interim basis," the Minister said.
