The Dow Jones industrial average fell 76.23 points to 9,096.00, extending Thursday's 39-point drop from Wednesday's record close of 9,211.84.
Broad-market indicators also posted sizeable losses amid reports that hundreds of looters had died in shopping mall fires in Indonesia during a fourth day of rioting.
The US Embassy urged all Americans to leave Indonesia, and several major companies such as Mobil, Citicorp and Merrill Lynch closed their operations there.
The sudden outbreak of civil unrest has undermined hopes that the Asian economy is on the road to recovery.
