A jittery German market ended the day 2 per cent lower with sentiment hit by a slide on Wall Street, vague uncertainty about the future of EMU, debt market weakness and impending elections in France.
Paris CAC-40: 2583.94 (+4.70)
French shares closed the Est trading before Sunday's election runoff with a slight gain after huge trading. Traders said that market was firmer after the CAC reached 2525, a level needed to settle May futures and options contracts.

Italian stocks slid to a lower close, depressed by the early fall on Wall Street, although the market was generally unmoved by the details of the government's three year economic plan.
