THE amalgamation of three law publishing companies operating in Ireland was formally announced at a reception yesterday. The firms - Sweet & Maxwell, Brehon Publishing and The Round Hall Press - are now trading under the name Round Hall Sweet & Maxwell.
Sweet & Maxwell, a London based law publisher and part of the Thomson Corporation, a Canadian international group specialising in meeting information needs, effected the amalgamation through the acquisition of Brehon Publishing in May 1995 and the takeover of The Round Hall Press the following November.
The new business will be able to exploit overseas markets for Irish texts, said Round Hall Sweet & Maxwell. All the Irish texts previously published by Sweet & Maxwell in London will now be published in Dublin by the new company which employs, 13 people. Seven of these jobs are new positions.
The managing director of the new grouping is Mr Bart Daly who established Brehon Publishing in 1993 and Round House in 1981. It will be based in Upper Ormonde Quay in Dublin.
Sweet & Maxwell, founded 200 years ago, has had a long tradition in Irish law publishing which was revived in the 1970s with a number of publications including Irish Current Law Statutes Annotated.
Brehon Publishing has had a number of publications including Commercial Law Practitioner, Irish Planning and Environ mental Law Journal and Medico Legal Journal of Ireland. The Round Hall Press publishes Irish Law Reports Monthly and a number off books for students and legal practitioners.
The business will initially concentrate on hard copy publications, but plans to move into digital publishing.
