A BRITISH company, Dredging International, has won the dredging contract for the Lee tunnel in Cork, which is currently under construction. The contract was awarded by the Tarmac Walls joint venture, which is responsible for the design and construction of the tunnel.
Under the contract, Dredging International will dredge the trench across the Lee from the main Cork Dublin Waterford road to Blackrock. Following the placement of seven prefabricated tunnel sections, the trench will be backfilled with 500,000 cubic metres of sand and gravel. The company expects to be on site in Cork for about 12 months. The casting of the seven tunnel sections is currently under way and these will be floated out and submerged one at a time, beginning October 1996. Trench dredging will begin in the spring.
