The continuing threat of higher interest rates demolished a rally on Wall Street yesterday, sending stocks lower even after a new report suggested the economy may not be overheating after all.
At the close of trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 9.19 points at 10,645.96. Broader stock indicators also gave up early gains and finished lower.
The Standard and Poor's 500 fell 0.67 to 1,328.05, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 1.49 to 2,623.63.
NYSE volume was 721.29 million shares at the close against 761.98 million in the previous session.
The NYSE composite index fell 0.69 to 625.38, and the American Stock Exchange composite index lost 3.98 to 784.25.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 2.14 to 442.63.
