Stocks turned lower at the close of trading in New York yesterday, breaking out of a tight range as continuing worries about interest rates and the latest warning about corporate earnings rattled the market.
At the close of trading on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 62.05, or 0.6 per cent, at 10,213.48.
Broader stock indicators also ended lower. The Standard and Poor's 500 fell 13.83 to 1,268.37, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 22.16 to 2,734.09.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 10-to-nine margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1,605 up, 1,463 down and 493 unchanged. NYSE volume totalled 850.86 million shares at close, against 876.95 million in the previous session.
As stocks swung in a narrow range in choppy trading, analysts said most investors appeared reluctant to buy in the sessions before the Federal Reserve's October 5th meeting on interest rates.
