WALL Street stocks shot into record territory in the final hour of trading with a burst of last-minute buying turning around a quiet day.

The Dow rose 78.50 points to dose at 7,067.46, topping Thursday's record close that took the blue-chip index past 7,000 for the first time.

Most broad-market indexes were also higher, except for the Nasdaq composite index which came under pressure from sagging technology stocks.

Stocks see-sawed for most of the day as cautious investors tried to determine whether the market would continue its upward drive. The Dow has jumped more than 8 per cent already this year.
