The Industrial Development Authority has been asked to convene a meeting on the future of 100 employees of Atlantic Mills Ltd, who were made redundant from the company's plant at Tullamore, Co Offaly, last week. The Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Ms Harney, said a meeting would take place between the IDA, and representatives from FAS, Forbairt, the County Council, workers' representatives, and the managing director of Atlantic Mills, Mr Dermot Murphy.
She said it was a matter of regret that the company had decided to close the plant, despite efforts to keep it open over a long period. FAS would immediately carry out a skills assessment of the workers. Opportunities would then be offered on skills courses.
"I can assure the workers, their families and the people of the areas that every effort will be made to secure alternative employment for all concerned," she said. Atlantic Mills, which has 300 employees in its other plant at Clondra, Co Longford, manufactures denim fabric for export. Its clients include Wrangler and Levi.
