US Federal Reserve chairman Mr Alan Greenspan's testimony before the Senate banking committee on Thursday - his first public statement under President George W Bush, will be the centrepiece for market watchers this week.

As the great and the good gather at Davos for the annual World Economic Forum, Mr Greenspan's words will be parsed for any signal of intentions on interest rates when the Fed's open markets committee meets at the end of the month.

In Europe, inflation figures for the euro zone today are likely to show a clear drop as the strengthening euro and lower oil prices kick in.
