The Asian Games has been experiencing major traffic jams, but on the information superhighway, not Bangkok's congested streets.

The official games website had one million hits in a 24-hour period ending at noon last Tuesday, causing logins to slow to a pace similar to that of a Bangkok bus at rush hour, games organisers said.

"The logins were clearly more than we expected," said games spokeswoman Ms Valerie McKenzie. The local server couldn't handle the overload, causing the delays, she said. A second server to handle the higher-than-expected logins was set up on Wednesday. Police have been pleased by the smooth flow of road traffic so far during the games thanks to special school and university holidays and appeals to spectators to take public transport to venues.
