German shares ended after bourse trading little changed from the official close. The firmer dollar and gains on Wall Street underpinned the German market. The DAX is expected to take its direction at the start of proceedings today from the US close and, there are hopes of another run at," the all time high set yesterday in after hours trading.

French stocks closed almost unchanged after encouraging US inflation data helped the bourse recover its early losses. Dealers said investors were cautious ahead of the Bundesbank council meeting today and the Russian presidential elections on Sunday.

Italian stocks ended firmer but there was little in the way of news to drive the market. "The market has been completely colourless, one senior trader said. The market is waiting for details of the government's additional budget measures, which are expected next week.
