Just in time for the today's launch of crisp, new euro banknotes, comes the international symbol for the currency. To bring it to the attention of every European, and perhaps to help gain acceptance for the euro itself, the symbol will be promoted in a £23 million campaign from Brussels. The euro symbol will be yellow, on a blue background, reminiscent of the European Union's flag; yellow stars in a circle on a blue background. The EU Commission says the new symbol will not necessarily be on euro banknotes when they come into circulation in 2002.
