THE European Commission yesterday approved the acquisition of a 49.9 per cent stake in Belgian telecoms company Belgacom by Ameritech International, Tele Danmark and Singapore Telecom.

The deal was notified for clearance to the Commission on January 26th under a regulation banning the creation or strengthening of dominant position which could harm competition in the EU.
