EMC Corporation, which employs more than 600 people in Cork and plans to employ more than 1,000 people there by the end of the year, has reported record company results for the second quarter of 1998. The data storage systems and software specialists increased profit after tax by 47 per cent to $189 million (£135 million) compared with the same period last year. Revenue for the second quarter was $952 million, up 33 per cent from the second quarter of 1997. Revenue from EMC's growing portfolio of enterprise storage software products surged 140 per cent to $98 million over the same period.

According to Mr Michael Ruettgers, EMC president and chief executive officer: "The accelerated growth and profitability levels we began to see a year ago have clearly been established. The second quarter marked our fifth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth exceeding 30 per cent in both revenue and income."
