Corner store chain Centra is to create 300 jobs by opening 20 new stores and expanding existing shops in the Republic, the company has announced.

Half the jobs will be in new businesses and the rest through extensions and other independent stores joining the branch network.

About €10 million is to invested in new store openings and expanding or refurbishing existing outlets.

Centra's managing director Martin Kelleher said the company had sales of €1.4 billion last year.

"Our continued success can be put down to our unique offer to consumers in terms of value and the position our retailers fulfil at the heart of their local communities," he said. "Our retail partners have been quick to adapt to the budget-conscious consumer, with initiatives such as rounded price points and multi-buys, combined with excellent bundle offers."

Centra has 458 stores across Ireland.
