A DENTIST, a doctor, developers and the company behind two defunct Dublin nightclubs were among the highest settlements contained in the Revenue Commissioners most recent list of tax defaulters.

The list, published yesterday, covered the three month-period to the end of December and listed 90 settlements with a total value of just under €15 million.

Of the 90 published settlements half were for amounts of €100,000 or more; six related to amounts which exceeded €500,000 while one exceeded €1 million.

Carlow dentist James Madden of Ballylennon House, Palatine, Co Carlow made a settlement of €1.73 million arising from the under declaration of income tax, following a “Revenue bogus non-resident account and off-shore assets” investigation.

Residential property developers George and Ruth Raymond of Rustica, Upper Kindlestown, Delgany, Co Wicklow, made a settlement of €890,641 arising from the under-declaration of VAT. It was not possible to contact either Mr or Ms Raymond yesterday.

James Brooke Tyrell, who is listed as a video production service supplier with an address in Church Gate, Church Road, Greystones, Co Wicklow, made a settlement of €724,682, relating to under declaration of income tax and VAT.

The former Fás assistant manager received a four-year sentence with two years suspended last March having defrauded the agency of more than €600,000 over a five-year period.

Dr Ibrahim El Sherif, a doctor with an address in Holywell on the Upper Kilmacud Road, Stillorgan, made a settlement of €524,194 which resulted from under declaration of income tax.

Mr El Sherif, who is originally from Libya but who has lived in Ireland for 20 years, is an ear, nose and throat consultant with Dublin's Beacon Hospital and Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Pod Entertainment Ltd, the company behind the now defunct Tripod and Crawdaddy nightclubs in Dublin, made a settlement of €479,211 arising from the under-declaration of VAT. Although The Irish Timesleft messages on director John Reynolds' voicemail yesterday no response was received before going to print.

John R Lynch, a solicitor with an address at Upper Mount Street in Dublin 2, made a settlement of €630,000 arising from the under declaration of income tax, VAT and capital gains tax. When contacted yesterday Mr Lynch said he had no comment to make.

Mary McAnaney, a cosmetic product distributor with an address in Dunmore, Carrigans, Co Donegal, who made a settlement of €577,677 with the Revenue Commissioners said yesterday that she was “very upset” by her inclusion in the list for an under declaration of income tax and VAT arising from a Revenue audit.

The Revenue noted settlements are only published when “extensive voluntary disclosure options are not availed of” and the default is as a result of “deliberate or careless behaviour”. More than 2,500 Revenue audits and investigations were settled between October 1st and December 31st 2011, yielding almost €128 million.
