The number of people employed by US companies in Ireland now stands at an all-time high of 140,000, according to the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland.

This represents growth of more than 30,000 in the numbers employed in past five years, according to American Chamber president Eamonn Sinnott.

Research carried out by the American Chamber, which will be revealed at the Chamber’s Independence Day celebrations in Dublin today, shows two thirds of Irish people significantly underestimate the level of employment in US companies in Ireland, believing that it is below 100,000 people.

“While 76 per cent of the Irish population agree that US companies are critical to the future of the Irish economy, the majority also do not fully appreciate the impact,” Mr Sinnott said.
