One National Terrestrial Trunked Radio licence (TETRA) will be issued by Telecoms regulator Ms Etain Doyle, following a comparative selection competition to be held in the autumn.
The radio licences are a more sophisticated version of two-way radio communications, enabling users to tailor the service to suit their own requirements and access public telephone networks.
Interested parties which responded to the consultation process included the Garda, the emergency services and ESB.
