Telecoms regulator Ms Etain Doyle has decided to award a Tetra (terrestrial trunked radio) public access mobile radio licence following a "beauty contest" process which begins on October 9th. Tetra mobile radio enables users to receive calls from mobile phones and to receive data over a network. Organisations likely to be interested in the licence and which responded to the initial consultation include the ESB, Eircell, Esat and the emergency services.
