DAX: 2,482.40 (-30.15)
The German market was a major loser on Wall Street jumpiness.
The Dax gave up 1.5 per cent on the day on low volume, as traders displayed caution ahead of Wall Street's opening and of some banks' six month results.
The majority of Frankfurt investors expected the Bundesbank to reduce its repo rate next week, a move that could be expected to help the economy.
CAC-40:1,960 (-32.5)
An early fall on Wall Street sent shivers through the Paris stock market, which closed down 1.63 per cent yesterday after retreating 2.8 per cent last week.
Mibtel: 9839 (-74)
The Milan stock market was in line with the others as the Mibtel index fell by 0.75 per cent in featureless trading.
Traders said the market struggled to creep back up again ahead of positive July inflation data expected later.
It was also depressed by several companies going exdividend, traders said.
