1. The attic: The attic is generally only used as a storage area and thus no heating is required. If insulation is currently less than 200mm then further layers should be added. The cost is from £2-£4 (€2.5-€5) per square metre, an average total cost of £200£300. The attic hatch or door should be checked for cold draughts and sealed with draught proofing if necessary.
2. The bathroom: A thermostatic mixing valve can be set to provide the same temperature hot water every time the shower is turned on.
3. The hot press: The cylinder should always be lagged to minimise heat loss. Lagging jackets retail at around £10.
4. Lighting: Compact Fluorescent Lamps should be used to replace existing bulbs. CFLs last 10 times longer than regular bulbs and use a fraction of the electricity. They cost from £6£10.
5. The Kitchen: When purchasing new laundry or refrigeration appliances look for the energy label and go for rating A or B where possible.
Install fluorescent tubes or CFLs.
6. Living room: Use CFLs or dimmer switches to achieve adjustable lighting. Unplug or turn off electrical equipment like televisions or hi-fi when not in use as they use energy even when they are on stand-by.
7. The hall, stairs and landing: An ideal location for CFLs. Lower the radiator to the lowest setting for background heating.
If you can feel a draught through the hall door or letterbox in winter then the perimeter should be draught proofed.
