Cork Corporation has taken steps to gain computer literacy qualifications through the new European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL). Last month 31 councillors each received a PC with email and Internet access, and together with 70 of their staff, they will be using the first approved multimedia course in Ireland for ECDL. The full course is concentrated on one easy-to-use CDRom, distributed here by Flexible Multimedia. The ECDL certification is recognised throughout the EU. It sets a European standard in computer skills as it measures competency, acts as a benchmark for recruitment, reduces a need for technical support, and increases productivity.

Flexible Multimedia is currently holding a number of nationwide information seminars about the ECDL. Between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week, the seminars will take place at the Herbert Park Hotel, Dublin; the Corrib Great Southern Hotel, Galway and Jury's Hotel, Limerick.
