AROUND THE BLOCK:NAMA made the decision back in June to demolish Gleann Riada in Strokestown, Ballyminion, Co Longford, an unoccupied 12-unit apartment block in an estate.

The reason for demolishing the block was that none of the units were sold and it had fallen into disrepair. “The agency has prioritised making the unfinished estate safe for residents and this has led to the decision in conjunction with Longford County Council to demolish the derelict apartment block,”said Nama at the time.

The demolition has recently taken place and while the residents of the 90 houses on the estate may be relieved that it’s no longer a safety hazard, they are now left with a big empty space near the entrance to the estate, and there are no plans to do anything more to it, according to a Nama spokesperson .

Nama is involved with a number of ghost estates around the country and says it intends to knock where it is uneconomic to finish-out an estate or a part of an estate or if it’s structurally unsafe.
