THE LONG abandoned Loftus Hall mansion on 63 acres overlooking Hook Head peninsula in south-west Wexford is expected to make around €1.8 million when it is auctioned next month by Sherry FitzGerald.
The nine-bay, non-basement house extends to 2,510sq m (27,124sq ft) over three storeys, and has seven reception rooms and 22 bedroom and function rooms.
It overlooks Waterford harbour and Dunmore East and has a superb private beach which offers complete seclusion. The house is in need of considerable upgrading and repair but features a hand-carved staircase, high ceilings, beautiful marble fireplaces and large bay windows.
It was built by the Marquis of Ely in 1870 and in the 1980s was run as a country house hotel by the Devereus family.
The selling agent says that the house “which needs obvious modernisation and upgrading could offer itself as a superb stately home or as a solid commercial venture in an ideal location”.
