A claim by a British petroleum industry association that figures being used in Bord Gais advertisements are incorrect has been "categorically" rejected by the gas supplier.

Bord Gais said the average cost of heating a typical home with natural gas is just over £1 per day and this figure is based on research on 250,000 gas heating homes. The company also said the figure is consistent with the findings of independent research carried out by An Foras Forbatha.

At the weekend, the British association, OFTEC, (the Oil Firing Technical Association of the Petroleum Industry), said the Bord Gais claim was inaccurate and misleading. It said figures published by analysts Sutherland Associates showed an average figure of £1.67 per day for heating and hot water for an average three bedroom home.

However, Bord Gais said this report is unusual as it shows oil and gas boilers operating at the same efficiency. "Both the research carried out by An Foras Forbatha and the fact sheets issued by the Irish Energy Centre show that gas boilers achieve higher efficiencies than oil boilers," Bord Gais said in a statement.

"We add over 20,000 new heating customers each year and this level of growth would not be achieved without the positive recommendations of satisfied customers," said Mr Paul O'Shaughnessy, head of gas trading and marketing at Bord Gais.
