Career: Former chief executive of Bord Bainne, he now runs his own company, a strategic consultancy firm. As well as the chairmanship of CIE, he holds several directorships. These include chairman of the building society EBS, director of Nutricia Ireland (a baby foods group), director of Celtic Anglian Water (Ireland) an offshoot of the British water company, and chairman of National Hardware.
Education: Born in Galway, he trained as an accountant and one of his first jobs was with RTE. He ceased practising accountancy in 1972.
