Small firms lobby group ISME said that, while it wants to see EMU succeed, the Government must prepare for the worst scenario. "In the 1992 currency crisis, Ireland was left to defend its own interest by eventually devaluing," it said.

"We can expect no help from the EU if a similar situation arises in the future," it added.
