Aegon UK, the British arm of the Netherlands-based insurer, is close to mounting a bid for Equitable Life that could offer financial support to the troubled life assurer's one million customers, including 25,000 in Ireland.

Aegon is increasingly confident that it can reach agreement. Equitable said it did not expect to make an announcement before next month.
