Men's Interprovincial Championship: The conveyor belt of talent that is Ulster golf just keeps chugging along. At Ballybunion yesterday the defending champions clinched the Golfsure sponsored Interprovincial Championship for the fourth time in five years with a 9-4 win over Connacht.
The path to victory was made a little easier with the withdrawals earlier in the week of Walker Cup caps Noel Fox and Colm Moriarty, the number one players for Leinster and Connacht respectively.
But no one could deny Ulster's superiority over the three days as they carved out clear-cut wins over Leinster and Munster before condemning Connacht to the wooden spoon to secure the title.
Leinster finished second, despite going down to Munster, who salvaged some pride when they overturned a one-point deficit after the foursomes to record a comfortable 8½ to 4½ victory.
But in the end they all bowed to Ulster, who went about their business in methodical fashion to cruise past the winning post long before the afternoon singles had concluded.
Fittingly it was City of Derry's Michael McGeady who got them there with a one-hole victory over Co Sligo's Sean McTernan.
Needing four and a half points from the nine singles, Ulster got to within one of victory before McGeady secured his fifth point of the week and his third successive success in the singles when he came from two down after 11 holes to win on the 18th.
Ulster's other winners were Richard Kilpatrick over Derek McNamara, Brian McElhinney, who beat Mark O'Sullivan 2 and 1, Michael Sinclair won on the 15th against David Dunne and Rory Leonard, who chipped in at the 17th to beat Michael McHugh.
