Tyrone change their defence

Pascal McConnell has regained his place in goal for Tyrone for Sunday's Ulster football final replay against Down in Clones

Pascal McConnell has regained his place in goal for Tyrone for Sunday's Ulster football final replay against Down in Clones. McConnell replaces John Devine after four goals were conceded in last Sunday's drawn game.

Ciarán Gourley comes in at centre back for Declan McCrossan and a vacancy has been left at full back in the hope either Colin Holmes, who missed last Sunday's game, or Chris Lawn, injured last Sunday, recover from injury in time. Stephen O'Neill and Gerard Calvan are again ruled out by injury.

Meanwhile, Down officials are furious over the rejection of midfieder Gregory McCartan's personal appeal against a one-month ban at Wednesday evening's meeting of the Games Administration Committee of the GAA.

McCartan's ban followed an incident in Sunday's final when he was shown a straight red card by Kerry referee Aidan Mangan after he threw the ball in retaliation at a Tyrone player (Brian McGuigan) who had tripped him.

The referee's interpretation of the incident that resulted in McCartan's dismissal shortly before half-time has angered Down officials. The referee cited McCartan as behaving in a manner dangerous to an opponent.

McCartan appeared before the GAC following his request for a personal hearing.

The ban means that, if Down win the replay, McCartan will miss the All-Ireland quarter-finals on the weekend of August 3rd-4th.

Defeat for Down would mean McCartan will not be eligible for the next round of qualifiers on Saturday week against Donegal. Even if Down beat Donegal McCartan will miss the All-Ireland quarter-finals as well.

Down have decided to defer the selection of their side until this evening at the earliest.

There are numerous options open to Paddy O'Rourke and his selectors to have the midfield area redressed. A likely move is to bring in natural wing forward Colm McCrickard who missed last Sunday's match because of a virus. Brendan Coulter is another likely midfield partner for Seán Ward, as are Liam Doyle and Brian Burns.

Meanwhile, it is understood former Sligo manager Peter Ford is a likely candidate for the Cavan manager's post following the resignation of Mattie Kerrigan.

The Limerick County Board are offering prime seats at the revamped Gaelic Grounds at €400 for a five-year period. Purchasers will be entitled to attend all matches at the venue, including Munster championships in all grades.

Limerick, who expect to take over from the builder at the end of the month, are left with a debt of €5 million on their €12 million investment.
