ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION TWO Tyrone 2-15 Sligo 0-15:TYRONE FINALLY got their league campaign off the ground with a deserved six-point win at Markievicz Park yesterday.
The win heightens Mickey Harte’s side’s prospects of staying in Division Two, but leaves Sligo with relegation worries.
Supersub Stephen O’Neill, Seán Cavanagh and Martin Penrose were the architects of Tyrone’s win with Cavanagh finishing the game with a goal and five points to his credit.
Mickey Harte was pleased with the win. “We have struggled to score goals but our first goal was a key score and helped us build up a comfort zone. The win gives us a fighting chance, if we hadn’t won we would be staring relegation in the face.”
Tyrone had first use of the wind and wasted no time in opening the scoring when Owen Mulligan floated the ball over the bar after 60 seconds.
Sligo opened their account on four minutes with a Mark Breheny free but Tyrone engineered a major breakthrough in the 10th minute.
A high dropping ball caused confusion in the Sligo defence with Enda McGinley finishing to the net.
Although Sligo scored four unanswered points during a five minute spell in the second-half a late goal by Seán Cavanagh sealed victory for the visitors.
