Women's football: Cora Staunton scored 2-8 yesterday as she inspired Mayo to a 2-11 to 1-8 victory over Monaghan in Division One A of the women's National Football League at Donaghmoyne.
Mayo led 1-2 to no score early on but Monaghan battled back and Niamh Kindlon's goal gave them a half-time lead, 1-4 to 1-3.
However, Mayo were superior in the second half. Staunton won, and then converted, a penalty 13 minutes after the resumption to help Mayo pull away for the victory.
Meanwhile, All-Ireland champions Galway hit two second-half goals to defeat Kerry in Kilmoyley, 2-8 to 1-7. Kerry's Noreen Fealey scored an early goal for the home side but they remain without any points in Division One A. Galway corner forward Philomena Flaherty scored both Galway goals while Yvonne Daly, Michelle Glynn and goalkeeper Tina Hughes were impressive.
Cork continued their winning ways with a 3-14 to 1-3 victory over 2004 All-Ireland junior champions Kildare.
Elsewhere, there were victories for Meath and Roscommon in Division One B, while Dublin's game with Louth was postponed. Meath were impressive in their 3-15 to 0-14 triumph over Waterford, while Roscommon defeated Tyrone 3-6 to 0-7 in Kiltoom.
