Chelsea's World Cup defender Dan Petrescu looks to be on his way out of Stamford Bridge after the club yesterday revealed that they would not stand in the way of a possible £2.5 million move to Dutch giants Ajax.
Petrescu was understood to have been looking for an extension to his current contract at Chelsea when he returned from World Cup duty with Romania in France. But Chelsea player-manager Gianluca Vialli told the 29-year-old that he was not guaranteed a place in his starting XI following the signing of Spanish full-back Albert Ferrer and the return to fitness of Gustavo Poyet. Liverpool midfielder Paul Ince had X-rays last night amid fears that he broke a toe during the Premiership win against Southampton at The Dell on Sunday. If a fracture is confirmed, Ince may be sidelined for up to four weeks.
Arsenal captain Tony Adams has revealed he will retire at the end of this season if a nagging ankle injury continues to blight his playing career.
The 31-year-old defender has to take anti-inflammatory tablets before matches and he is worried that the side-effects may cause permanent damage.
"If I find I have to take them before every game this season, then I will have to give a lot of thought to carrying on next season," he said.
Eric Cantona has been granted one last wish by Manchester United and will skipper the side in tonight's Testimonial match for the Munich air disaster.
The French star flew back to Manchester yesterday for the first time since his shock retirement last summer and will lead United for a game which marks the 40th anniversary of the crash. As well as pulling on a red shirt for the final time, Cantona will also address the crowd as he has insisted on bidding a personal au revoir to the fans.
Teddy Sheringham is poised to go public with his own World Cup revelations later this year - which will include his personal thoughts on Glenn Hoddle.
The England coach's recently serialised views in his own book on France '98 have sparked a great deal of controversy and Sheringham's reflections could inflame the situation.
Sheringham will go into detail with regard to his infamous nightclub antics in Portugal before the tournament, which led to Hoddle forcing the player to make a public apology.
Irish international midfielder John Sheridan will train with Huddersfield Town this week, hoping to secure a permanent deal at the McAlpine Stadium.
Aston Villa striker Dwight Yorke has re-affirmed his desire to move to Manchester United and is still hoping that a transfer will take place before Thursday's signings deadline for European eligibility.
John Gregory, Villa's manager, has rejected a £10 million offer from United, but Yorke said last night: "It is fair to say I still want to go and I would like it to happen before Thursday because I want to play for United in the Champions League. It is very flattering that they have said publicly that they want me, and I feel it would be the right move."
