A good all-round display by St Joseph's, Rochfortbridge, brought them an unexpected win over the home favourites at Portmarnock yesterday.
An early penalty, converted by Padraig Leavy, helped St Joseph's into a 1-3 to 0-3 lead by half-time and they were never truly troubled after that. Portmarnock, who made three substitutions, got a penalty of their own but it failed to swing the match for them.
The superb kicking of Gordon McDonnell, with four points in total, helped the Westmeath school build on their lead throughout the second half and a late goal by substitute Mark Cole sealed the win.
Scorers: St Joseph's - P Leavy 1-2; G McDonnell 0-4; M Cole 1-0; E Miller, A Brerton, D Cooney 0-1 each. Portmarnock - B Holland 1-1; P Doyle 0-3; K O'Driscoll 0-1.
