Irish junior champion Mark Scanlon of the Ireland team beat his British counterpart Yanto Barker at the finish of stage one of the Credit Union Junior Tour yesterday from Coleraine to Belfast.
Scanlon and Barker were out in front at the end of the 66 miles at Anderstown and Scanlon sprinted in with a couple of lengths to spare but a group of eight went the wrong way at a roundabout approaching the finish and lost so much time they came in behind the main group. After a lengthy deliberation officials decided to give those involved a time it was reckoned they were in arrears when they went off course - a minute and 45 seconds - and ruled that Bradley Wiggins of British team Brite was third.
Scanlon was to the fore in the first decisive breakaway attempt and Barker and eight others joined him as they forged ahead at Ballymena, 26 miles. All the top teams were represented in the group but at Glenavy with 15 miles left Scanlon surged ahead and only Barker could go with him. At the finish Scanlon had the edge and he has the first leader's yellow jersey for stage two today to Downpatrick.
Stage one (66 miles from Coleraine to Belfast): 1, M Scanlon (Ireland) 2:22:20; 2, Y Barker (Britain) same time; 3, B Wiggins (Team Brite) at 1:45; 4, F van Katwijk (Holland); 5, D McGowan (Britain); 6, M St Laurent (Canada) all same time.
Scott Hamilton of Maryland Wheelers repeated last year's championship double on Saturday when he added the 25 miles time trial title to the 10 miles event he retained the previous week.
On the Moira-Glenavy course Hamilton clocked 52 minutes and 16 seconds to win by 17 seconds from David McCann with Jamie Hunter third another 10 seconds slower.
