Two brilliant second-half goals from Trevor Hogan helped Rathnure win their 19th Wexford senior hurling title as Glynn-Barntown suffered the cruel luck of losing their third final in a Wexford Park thriller yesterday.
Playing with a strong wind in the first half, it was Paul Carley who kept Glynn-Barntown in it with an amazing display of accuracy which rocked the reigning champions, Rathnure.
Glynn-Barntown needed a good start but it was John O'Connor who pointed Rathnure in front inside 60 seconds of the start, but then Carley popped over three excellent points from placed balls, with two coming from 65s.
If Rathnure needed anyone to inspire them it was Paul Codd and the Wexford forward star responded with two pointed frees to bring the sides level 0-3 each after 15 minutes.
And then it was the turn of Carley, who continued to demonstrate amazing accuracy from frees, and his succession of points sent the challengers in with a four-point interval lead (0-8 to 0-4).
Rathnure needed to erase the deficit in the early phases of the second half if they were to entertain prospects of depriving Glynn-Barntown of their first senior hurling title, having lost out in their previous two final appearances.
But it was Glynn-Barntown who responded, with points from Paul Carley and Derek Leonard, before Paul Codd and Carley exchanged points leaving the challengers leading 0-11 to 0-5.
Rathnure relied on the great play of Paul Codd and Michael O'Leary to haul them back within two points, 0-11 to 0-9, before Trevor Hogan gave Rathnure the impetus for victory, crashing a great ground shot to the net to put the champions one point in front with only 12 minutes remaining.
Hogan then grabbed his second before Robbie Codd did the final damage with a third, which sent the title holders on to back-to-back titles.
The goals, coming on 46 minutes, 55 minutes and the third 30 seconds later, were a devastating salvo, which ended Glynn-Barntown's dreams of a first title, despite a late goal from half-forward PJ Carley.
