Quality in Quest

Racing at Gowran depends on the track passing a 7 a.m. inspection this morning

Racing at Gowran depends on the track passing a 7 a.m. inspection this morning. The ground yesterday was officially "yielding to soft" but the Gowran manager Tom Carroll said: "Even though we're alright at the moment, the forecast is diabolical. The inspection is precautionary."

If the fixture gets the red light, it will be a blow for Jim Bolger who looks to have the winning of the featured £16,000 Cordell Lavarack Race with the consistent Castle Quest.

The filly has a 7lb penalty for landing the Listed Brownstown Stakes at Leopardstown in early July but still looks fairly treated here.

Castle Quest's rating of 106 was emphasised by her good second to Haami in the Desmond Stakes and with the day that could be in it, her early season Curragh success on soft ground is encouraging.

Armilina, Try For Ever and Seasonal Style all ran behind Strategic on Saturday with Try For Ever acting very mulish very quickly and a bigger danger could be John Oxx's Curragh scorer Remuria who should be open to improvement.

If racing is cancelled there will be a lot of disappointed connections. A whopping 117 horses are declared to run in the seven races and while Castle Quest can provide a touch of quality in the feature, Slip Sliding can do the same in the opening maiden.

The daughter of Michael Tabor's Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch is reputed to be pretty useful and she can take this ahead of the Nashwan filly Colourful Cast.

Hypolata was something of a revelation when landing a maiden at Kilbeggan by 11 lengths from By Him Self with two distances back to the third and fourth. Hypolyta is stepped up in trip to the three mile handicap hurdle but that could only suit more.

Tower Project, third to Clonmel Commercial at Tralee, is the marginal call in the two and a half mile handicap hurdle while the Galway third Corrib Lady is a tentative choice in the Nursery.
